Chapter Thirty-six
Sophie
Sheâd known today would be difficult, but sheâd wanted to come. And she was glad she had. It had been fun helping Josh and Steve choose their suits. It had taken her mind off her heartbreak too. Theyâd tried several on but finally decided on a light grey three-piece suit with a lavender tie to match the bridesmaidsâ dresses.
âKate loves lavender, so I think we should have purple, white and green as the colour scheme,â Steve said. âItâs the colour of the suffragettes, Kate will appreciate that touch.â
âSounds lovely,â Sophie agreed. Josh and Maddie nodded too.
âWell, I donât think weâll need to meet up now until weâre at the airport in Gibraltar,â Josh said. Heâd arranged to meet Sophie and Maddie at the airport and drive them to the hotel.
âI hope not!â Maddie said, then she grinned apologetically as if sheâd realised how rude that had sounded. âItâs just Iâm busy and all this wedding planning is eating into my time. Iâm sure itâs the same for you too.â
âYou can say that again,â Josh replied.
Sophie was actually glad of the wedding planning now; it took her mind off her break up with Glenn and gave her something to focus on. Sheâd have been moping in the flat today if she hadnât joined them shopping, she thought. Just then her phone rang. She glanced at the screen. âItâs Kate. Iâll talk to her later,â she said, allowing the call to end, but it immediately rang again.
âBest to take the call,â Maddie said. âIt sounds like she really wants to talk to you and it might be something that affects the wedding.â She turned to Steve and Josh. âKeep quiet, you two, we donât want her to know that youâre here.â
âTrue.â Sophie swiped the screen. âHi, Kate . . .â
âSophie!â she could hear the sob in Kateâs voice. âI think Steveâs having an affair.â
Sophie shot a glance at Steve who was watching her, waiting to hear what Kate wanted. âIâm sure he isnât, Kate, Steve idolises you . . .â
Steve and Josh exchanged worried glances.
âYeah, well, thatâs what I thought, but thereâs definitely something going on. Iâve caught him a few times having whispered phone calls, and he never leaves his phone around, heâs always carrying it with him â heâs even put a passcode on it, as if he doesnât want me to see something. And . . .â another sob, âI came home a bit earlier last week and he was sitting at the kitchen table doing something on the laptop but closed the lid as soon as I came in.â
Sophieâs mind was racing. It was obvious that Steveâs attempts to plan the wedding were causing him to be secretive and arouse suspicion in Kate. What could she say to reassure her friend? This was really awkward, especially as Steve was listening.
âItâs probably all work-related, you know how Steve is about client confidentiality,â Sophie said.
âMaybe.â Kate sounded doubtful. âBut thereâs something different about him just lately, Soph. I donât know how to describe it.
