Chapter Thirty-six

Sophie

She’d known today would be difficult, but she’d wanted to come. And she was glad she had. It had been fun helping Josh and Steve choose their suits. It had taken her mind off her heartbreak too. They’d tried several on but finally decided on a light grey three-piece suit with a lavender tie to match the bridesmaids’ dresses.

‘Kate loves lavender, so I think we should have purple, white and green as the colour scheme,’ Steve said. ‘It’s the colour of the suffragettes, Kate will appreciate that touch.’

‘Sounds lovely,’ Sophie agreed. Josh and Maddie nodded too.

‘Well, I don’t think we’ll need to meet up now until we’re at the airport in Gibraltar,’ Josh said. He’d arranged to meet Sophie and Maddie at the airport and drive them to the hotel.

‘I hope not!’ Maddie said, then she grinned apologetically as if she’d realised how rude that had sounded. ‘It’s just I’m busy and all this wedding planning is eating into my time. I’m sure it’s the same for you too.’

‘You can say that again,’ Josh replied.

Sophie was actually glad of the wedding planning now; it took her mind off her break up with Glenn and gave her something to focus on. She’d have been moping in the flat today if she hadn’t joined them shopping, she thought. Just then her phone rang. She glanced at the screen. ‘It’s Kate. I’ll talk to her later,’ she said, allowing the call to end, but it immediately rang again.

‘Best to take the call,’ Maddie said. ‘It sounds like she really wants to talk to you and it might be something that affects the wedding.’ She turned to Steve and Josh. ‘Keep quiet, you two, we don’t want her to know that you’re here.’

‘True.’ Sophie swiped the screen. ‘Hi, Kate . . .’

‘Sophie!’ she could hear the sob in Kate’s voice. ‘I think Steve’s having an affair.’

Sophie shot a glance at Steve who was watching her, waiting to hear what Kate wanted. ‘I’m sure he isn’t, Kate, Steve idolises you . . .’

Steve and Josh exchanged worried glances.

‘Yeah, well, that’s what I thought, but there’s definitely something going on. I’ve caught him a few times having whispered phone calls, and he never leaves his phone around, he’s always carrying it with him – he’s even put a passcode on it, as if he doesn’t want me to see something. And . . .’ another sob, ‘I came home a bit earlier last week and he was sitting at the kitchen table doing something on the laptop but closed the lid as soon as I came in.’

Sophie’s mind was racing. It was obvious that Steve’s attempts to plan the wedding were causing him to be secretive and arouse suspicion in Kate. What could she say to reassure her friend? This was really awkward, especially as Steve was listening.

‘It’s probably all work-related, you know how Steve is about client confidentiality,’ Sophie said.

‘Maybe.’ Kate sounded doubtful. ‘But there’s something different about him just lately, Soph. I don’t know how to describe it.
